The Economic Development and Sustainability (EDS) Department, formally known as Village Economic Investment (VEI), was created by NANA to broaden its focus on programs, initiatives and opportunities to assist NANA in carrying out its mission to improve the quality of life for shareholders, including addressing high cost of living issues. EDS will facilitate funding for in-region communities to offset the high cost of living by addressing the lack of energy security and the burdensome cost of fuel, along with other priorities such as broadband and community infrastructure.
Economic Development & Sustainability
The NANA board of directors approved funding for shareholder fuel subsidies; heating maintenance training and wages to support a regional home heating maintenance program; hunter support; bulk fuel tank farm assessments; and a feasibility study for a regional bulk fuel purchase program.
The VEI program began in 2009 leading to various infrastructure projects to benefit shareholders and villages in the NANA region. To date, NANA VEI grant funds, through the EDS Department, has funded a total of 112 projects worth an allocated amount of more than $23 million. Overall, the NANA board of directors has approved a total of $34 million – a $3 million per village allocation for economic development programs and infrastructure projects.
The name change from VEI to EDS reflects NANA’s commitment to maximizing opportunities for all shareholders.
Building professional relationships with other village and regional organizations are foundational to our success. These include local Tribal and city governments – all of which share the vision of improving the well-being of communities in the region. The EDS team works closely with regional, state and federal stakeholders to leverage funding and resource opportunities to maximize benefits to shareholders and regional communities.
Atautchikun, LLC is a companion element to EDS, formed to qualify for a broad range of grants to serve NANA communities and its shareholders and is housed within the EDS department.
We encourage you to connect to find out ways how you can show your support or get involved and become a part of our mission. Or even if you have any general inquiries or comments, we would love to hear from you.
